Abagusii artisans in southwestern Kenya hand carved this useful desk accessory set from soft soapstone, known locally as kisii stone. 

The stone, which resembles talc, can vary in color from totally white to a soft cream tone with veins of red, yellow and black from various minerals that are sometimes present in the stone.

Kisii District is one of Kenya's less developed areas, but the carvers are recognized worldwide for their ability to work the soft stone into both realistic and abstract sculptures, as well as useful items like this desk set.
